I love things that are bad. Bad Movies (Plan 9 From Outer Space, Robot Monster, I Drink Your Blood, I Eat Your Skin), Bad Food (White Castle, Ring Dings, Popeyes Fried Chicken) and yes… Bad Music. Now for some people that would mean Mariah Carey or Young Jeezy, and I would agree. But for me, Bad music is music that is so bizarre and strange that it becomes compelling, something that you need to sit through because the belief that it could exist is so unbelievable. That someone actually wrote it, played it, worked on it and committed it to tape and put it out there for the world to listen to, thinking that it was destined for greatness. And it does in my opinion. Think of someone who is deaf/dumb/blind who has never heard music before in their lives, given a musical instrument and told to go for it. How does one explain the Shaggs, Jandek or even Wesley Willis?
Luie Luie Sings The Touchy is an astounding album. Luie Luie plays all the instruments and even explains what the songs mean. The Touchy comes with a “Touchy” button which is integral to the dance. You are to “Touchy” your dance partner by each wearing a button and then touching the buttoms together when you dance. The music goes off the rails almost immediately, losing tempo, tune and structure and sounding like a musical fruit salad that was run over by a ’72 Pinto. The rtest of the album goes into variations of the “Touchy” theme.
I love this album but unfortunately, not everyone feels the same way i do. I put the cd in the player while driving my girlfriend Sandra to Williamsburg. Halfway into track two she cried out in a plaintive wail, “Please, can you put on something else? I can’t take it anymore!!”.
We’re still together, Touchy or no Touchy……
